Day Five: Mental Toughness
“I hold to the Truth, despite appearances to the contrary, thus attracting the thoughts of my heart into my life.”
The most difficult work on the planet is not done by the sweat of our brow. In fact, I dare say that few people even bother to try to do the most difficult work.
Deliberate thinking.
We live in a “call and response” culture, which demands our time and attention and often gets it without any resistance. We have gone digital for work, wireless for play, online for matters of urgency but often operate like a rotary phone in matters of critical thought.
Why is this even an issue?
it is vital to our existence that we engage ourselves in an internal dialogue between our conscious and unconscious minds. We already do this whether we are alert to it or not, and we may often think we have no control over it, but we have full control. Deliberate thinking happens when we intentionally quiet our minds and invest time in reviewing and challenging our beliefs and common thought patterns, and where necessary, replace errant thoughts with Truth.
This sounds easy right? Yes, in fact it is that easy. So why have I said that it is the most difficult work to do? Because after planting those seeds of Truth in your subconscious mind, all we have to go from is our belief. Nothing has changed in our eyesight, but we “know” something different within. Holding to this new Truth in the face of opposition or inactivity is the hard work of faith.
You’ve had a dream of being in great physical shape. You see the infomercials, read about the fad diets, and listen to countless talk show hosts about miracle solutions, then you say ENOUGH! You realize your body deserves to be healthy and lean (whatever that means to your body composition and frame) so you get an image of yourself in your mind. You tell yourself that you are going to do this.
Then a friend invites you out for deep-dish pizza, or your niece has a birthday party and provides your favorite cake and ice cream, or your resolution has hit you right after the holidays and you have tons of leftovers that are calling out to you. You rationalize and say, hey who am I to be rude to my friend? it’s just one party….it’s just one snack….
and the Truth takes a beating.
In these instances we often default to those behaviors that not only brought us culinary satisfaction, but emotional gratification as well. Holding to the Truth will require attaching stronger emotions to our becoming physically fit and living a healthy lifestyle, than the emotions we associate with indulgence.
I said it was tough work right?
How long can we sustain such thinking? We underutilize 95% of our mental capacity. We have been given minds that can do anything if we take the time to discipline them. Renew the mind. Our culture relies on our default mode of thinking: conformity. Advertisers predict our behavior by banking on this conformity. But we have been created to constantly be in transformation mode. Always growing, always thinking, always creating. Always being born again in our hearts and mind. Always being filled with Spirit. This is not a single event–it is a lifetime of renewal that happens on the cellular level all the way to our external appearance.
Where are the great thinkers of OUR generation?
The great thinker is latent in you. There are no prodigies. No one has any more or less thinking capacity than another. That is a lie. We are as great as we demand ourselves to become. The Creator has no favorites.
Take the time each day to clear your agenda for clearing your mind. Engage in thinking intently about the vision you have for your body, your career, your dream, and your family. Tell your unconscious mind the Truth about those things, despite what things look like, despite how you “feel” about them. Intentionally FEEL GOOD about that Truth. Get butterflies about the Truth again. Feel euphoria about the Truth! And if anything in your day-to-day life brings another feeling, remind yourself of the Truth by FEELING GOOD again. The more you do it, the less the lie appears…. and the more the Truth will manifest in your life.
